You are here: About Us >
Many people strive to slim down in order to improve their appearance or boost their self-esteem. And these are perfectly good reasons to achieve and maintain healthy body weight. However, there is one other reason, which, in our view, trumps all the rest. It is called type II diabetes.
Excess weight, along with physical inactivity, is the major factor in the development of type II diabetes. In fact, up to a third of the people who are overweight and inactive may eventually develop diabetes. Notably, type II diabetes was a rarity 100 years ago when most people engaged in physical labor and had limited supply of high calorie foods.
The proportion of people with diabetes or carbohydrate intolerance (a.k.a. prediabetes) has increased dramatically over the past decades and it is expected to grow even further. Based on the current trend, tens of millions of cases of diabetes and its debilitating long-term complications (such as kidney damage or blindness) may develop in the USA alone. Unless this trend is reversed, the impact on the health care system and the society as a whole will be catastrophic.
The good news is that type II diabetes can be prevented. Prediabetes and some cased of type II diabetes may even be reversible. The key is to achieve and maintaining optimal body weight and level of physical activity.
But what is the best strategy for sustainable weight control? How can you maximize the chances of living free of diabetes and other weight-related diseases? Where to look for answers?
Unfortunately, the world of weight loss information is flooded with substandard, biased and sometimes misleading material, making it very hard to navigate. While there is a small chance that a randomly selected weight loss product, diet or system may help you, chances of the opposite are far greater. The best way to look for an effective approach is to analyze scientific research, preferably published in peer-reviewed journals and confirmed by several well-designed independent studies.
That's where we can help! This site has been created by a small group of nutritionists, scientists and weight loss enthusiasts who bring the benefits of high quality weight loss research to general public. Our particular focus is sustainable weight loss and control as well as prevention of weight-related diseases. Since we do not sell weight loss or diet products, we are unbiased. Our primary goal is empowering the public with objective, science-based information.
